Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CBAM, carbon border adjustment, and how CBAMcalc helps you stay compliant.

About CBAM

What is CBAM?
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is an EU regulation (2023/956) that puts a carbon price on imports of certain goods into the European Union. It ensures that the carbon price of imports is equivalent to the carbon price of domestic production, preventing carbon leakage.
When does the CBAM definitive phase start?
The CBAM definitive phase began on January 1, 2026. From this date, importers must purchase and surrender CBAM certificates corresponding to the carbon price that would have been paid, had the goods been produced under the EU's carbon pricing rules.
What is the first CBAM annual declaration deadline?
The first CBAM annual declaration is due by September 30, 2027, covering imports from January 1 to December 31, 2026.
Which products are covered by CBAM?
CBAM covers imports of iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, electricity, and hydrogen. The regulation applies based on CN (Combined Nomenclature) codes.
What is the de-minimis exemption?
Under the Omnibus simplification package (Regulation 2025/2083), importers with less than 50 tonnes of net mass per calendar year of CBAM goods are exempt from CBAM obligations. Note: this exemption does not apply to imports of electricity.

Calculations & Pricing

How are CBAM certificates priced?
CBAM certificate prices are set quarterly based on the average closing price of EU ETS (Emissions Trading System) allowances on the auction platform. The price is published by the European Commission at the beginning of each quarter.
What are 'specific embedded emissions'?
Specific embedded emissions are the direct and (where applicable) indirect greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of goods produced, expressed in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of product (tCO₂/t).
Can I deduct carbon prices paid abroad?
Yes. If an effective carbon price has been paid in the country of production (e.g., a carbon tax), this can be deducted from the CBAM liability. Enter the carbon price paid abroad (in €/tCO₂) in the calculator.
What are CBAM default values?
If actual emissions data is unavailable, EU default values apply with a 15% markup. This conservative increase incentivizes importers to obtain actual emissions data from their suppliers.
